Working With Text

Discuss the Following in Class. Then Write Your Own Answers.

1. When he felt the earthquake, do you think Ignesious immediately worked about a tsunami? Give reasons for your answer. Which sentence in the text tells you that the Ignesious family did not have any time to discuss and plan their course of action after the tsunami struck?

Ans: Ignesious didn't get an idea about the tsunami when the earthquake came. They concluded that they were just tremors and took the television off the table and placed it on the ground. After the tsunami struck, there wasn't enough time to discuss and plan their course of action and it led to only chaos and confusion. The following tells it clearly: “In the chaos and confusion, two of his children caught hold of the hands of their mother’s father and mother’s brother and rushed in the opposite directions.”

2. Which words in the list below describe Sanjeev, in your opinion? (Look up the dictionary for words that you are not sure of.)

cheerful ambitious brash      brave         careless

heroic             selfless           heartless            humorous

Use Words From the List to Complete the Three Sentences Below.

(i) I don't know if Sanjeev was cheerful, _____________or _____________.

Ans: I don't know if Sanjeev was cheerful, ambitious or humorous.

(ii) I think that he was very brave, _______________and ______________.

Ans: I think that he was very brave, heroic and selfless.

(iii) Sanjeev was not heartless, ______________or ___________.

Ans: Sanjeev was not heartless, brash or careless.

3. How are Meghna and Almas's stories similar?

Ans: Meghna and Almas were the only members of their families who were saved after the tsunami hit. The rest of the family was washed away in the tsunami. Both were floating in the sea for days. Meghna held onto a wooden door and floated in the sea for about two days. She was brought to the shore by a wave. Almas fainted after she climbed onto a log of wood and woke up in the hospital. Almas after the incident couldn't talk about it and Meghna was seen walking on the seashore in a daze.

4. What are the different ways in which Tilly's parents could have reacted to her behaviour? What would you have done if you were in their place?

Ans: Tilly's parents instead of listening to her, alternatively, could have calmed her down and told her that there was nothing to worry about. If they would have done that the family would have been washed away by the tsunami. If I were in their place, I would have done the same and realised that we were in danger and acted the way she would have guided.

5. If Tilly's award was to be shared, who do you think she should share it with - her parents or her geography teacher?

Ans: I believe she should share her award with her geography teacher. She was a dedicated teacher and taught her students about tsunamis and the awareness helped her to save many lives.

6. What are the two different ideas about why so few animals were killed in the tsunami? Which idea do you find more believable?

Ans: The first idea is that animals have a heightened sixth sense. When they felt the earth trembling, they ran away from the place. This protected most of the animals from the tsunami. The second idea is that they have a heightened sense of hearing. They could hear the vibrations produced from the earth. The acute sense of hearing and feeling the vibrations of the earth helped them to protect themselves, before the human being could even realize what was happening.

Working With Language

1. Go through Part-I carefully, and make a list of as many words as you can find that indicate movement of different kinds. (There is one word that occurs repeatedly-count how many times!)Put them into three categories.

fast movement                            slow movement                            neither slow nor fast

Can you explain why there are many words in one column and not in the others?

Ans:

The ‘fast movement’ column has many more words as compared to the other two columns. This is because the story is about a tsunami, which is a fast movement of waters. Due to the tsunami, all the immediate actions are fast, such as running, climbing and sweeping away people by water.

2. Fill in the blanks in the sentences below (the verbs given in brackets will give you a clue).

(i) The earth trembled, but not many people felt the ____________. (tremble)

Ans: The earth trembled, but not many people felt the trembling.

English Grammar – Clauses Chapter - Class 9th CBSE Hindi and English Medium | Phrase Vs Clause

Clauses

____________________________________

A clause is a group of words that forms part of a sentence that has a subject and a finite verb of its own. For example. ‘

The teacher told him that he was late.

This sentence can be broken into two parts.

• The teacher told him.

• That he was late.

The answer lies in the sense that much like a phrase a clause is also a group of related words but the only difference being that a phrase lacks either a subject or a predicate.

A clause can be further classified into four types.

1. The main clause has a subject, a verb and forms a complete thought. They can stand on their own as a complete sentence. Example:

• Neha ate a lot of cookies.

• ‘Neha ate a lot of cookies’ is an independent or main clause.

• My cat likes fish.

• If you look at the above two sentences, you will notice that there is a subject, a verb and the sentence forms a complete thought.

2. Subordinate or dependent clause is a type of clause that depends on the main clause for meaning, Example:

• [Neha ate a lot of cookies] – [after she watched the cooking show.]

(Main clause) – (subordinate clause)

Types of subordinate clauses:

Noun Clause

A subordinate clause that acts as a noun in a sentence is called a Noun clause.

Examples:

• I told him that I would get his book.

 क्लॉज़ (Clauses)

क्लॉज़ शब्दों का ऐसा समूह होता है जो वाक्य का एक हिस्सा बनता है और जिसमें स्वयं का एक कर्ता (subject) तथा एक निर्धारित क्रिया (finite verb) होती है। उदाहरण के लिए:
The teacher told him that he was late.
इस वाक्य को दो भागों में बाँटा जा सकता है:
• The teacher told him.
• That he was late.

उत्तर इस बात में है कि जैसे वाक्यांश (Phrase) एक शब्दों का समूह होता है, वैसे ही क्लॉज़ भी संबंधित शब्दों का समूह होता है। लेकिन एकमात्र अंतर यह है कि वाक्यांश में या तो कर्ता होता है या क्रिया, जबकि क्लॉज़ में दोनों होते हैं

क्लॉज़ को चार भागों में वर्गीकृत किया जा सकता है:

1. मुख्य उपवाक्य (Main Clause)

मुख्य उपवाक्य में एक कर्ता, एक क्रिया होती है और यह एक पूर्ण विचार को व्यक्त करता है। ये स्वतंत्र रूप से एक पूर्ण वाक्य बन सकते हैं।
उदाहरण:
• Neha ate a lot of cookies.
• "Neha ate a lot of cookies" एक स्वतंत्र या मुख्य उपवाक्य है।
• My cat likes fish.

इन वाक्यों में आप देख सकते हैं कि एक कर्ता है, क्रिया है और वाक्य एक पूर्ण विचार देता है।

2. आधीन उपवाक्य (Subordinate or Dependent Clause)

यह उपवाक्य मुख्य उपवाक्य पर निर्भर रहता है और अपने आप में पूर्ण अर्थ नहीं देता।
उदाहरण:
• [Neha ate a lot of cookies] – [after she watched the cooking show.]
(मुख्य उपवाक्य) – (आधीन उपवाक्य)

प्रकार:

(A) संज्ञा उपवाक्य (Noun Clause)

जब कोई उपवाक्य वाक्य में एक संज्ञा का कार्य करता है तो उसे संज्ञा उपवाक्य कहते हैं।
उदाहरण:

प्रश्न 1 / Question 1:

Is zero a rational number? Can you write it in the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0?
क्या शून्य एक परिमेय संख्या है? क्या आप इसे p/q के रूप में लिख सकते हैं, जहाँ p और q पूर्णांक हों और q ≠ 0 हो?

उत्तर / Answer:
Yes, zero is a rational number.
We can write it as 0/1, 0/2, 0/3, etc., where denominator is not zero.
हाँ, शून्य एक परिमेय संख्या है।
इसे 0/1, 0/2, 0/3 आदि के रूप में लिखा जा सकता है, जहाँ हर में कोई भी शून्य के अलावा पूर्णांक हो सकता है।

प्रश्न 2 / Question 2:

Find six rational numbers between 3 and 4.
3 और 4 के बीच छह परिमेय संख्याएँ ज्ञात कीजिए।

उत्तर / Answer:
We can write 3 as 30/10 and 4 as 40/10.
Now, rational numbers between them:
31/10, 32/10, 33/10, 34/10, 35/10, 36/10
हम 3 को 30/10 और 4 को 40/10 के रूप में लिख सकते हैं।
अब इनके बीच की परिमेय संख्याएँ हैं:
31/10, 32/10, 33/10, 34/10, 35/10, 36/10

प्रश्न 3 / Question 3:

Find five rational numbers between 3/5 and 4/5.
3/5 और 4/5 के बीच पाँच परिमेय संख्याएँ ज्ञात कीजिए।

उत्तर / Answer:
Convert both to equivalent fractions with denominator 50:
3/5 = 30/50, 4/5 = 40/50
Rational numbers between them:
31/50, 32/50, 33/50, 34/50, 35/50

3/5 = 30/50 और 4/5 = 40/50
इनके बीच की पाँच परिमेय संख्याएँ हैं:
31/50, 32/50, 33/50, 34/50, 35/50

प्रश्न 4 / Question 4:

State whether the following statements are true or false. Give reasons.
बताइए कि निम्नलिखित कथन सत्य हैं या असत्य। कारण दीजिए।

(i) Every natural number is a whole number.
प्रत्येक प्राकृतिक संख्या एक पूर्णांक होती है।
✅ True. All natural numbers (1, 2, 3,...) are also whole numbers.

(ii) Every integer is a whole number.
प्रत्येक पूर्णांक एक पूर्ण संख्या होती है।
❌ False. Negative integers (like -1, -2) are not whole numbers.

(iii) Every rational number is a whole number.
प्रत्येक परिमेय संख्या एक पूर्ण संख्या होती है।
❌ False. Rational numbers like 1/2 or 3/4 are not whole numbers.

प्रश्न 5 / Question 5:

Write four more rational numbers in the form of p/q with q ≠ 0.
p/q के रूप में (जहाँ q ≠ 0 हो) चार और परिमेय संख्याएँ लिखिए।

उत्तर / Answer:
Examples:
2/3, -5/7, 8/1, -9/4
(You can give any 4 rational numbers where numerator and denominator are integers and denominator ≠ 0)

उदाहरण:
